Maximizing Business Value of IT Infrastructure and Operations Management
Annur Sumar, Consultant, Concurrency; Former VP-IT, Duff & Phelps
Optimizing infrastructure resources,
streamlining operations and becoming a strategic
business partner is what most IT Departments
strive for. However, a key challenge that most
are presented with is the need to be able to
move out of firefighting mode and into a dynamic
optimized workload so that they can work towards
becoming that strategic business partner. This
is not always an easy task. If properly
strategized, streamlining key repeatable
processes and aligning IT’s service delivery
process can bring IT departments out of
firefighting mode and lead them into a
successful dynamically optimized IT
infrastructure.
In this session attendees will learn:
- The importance of building out an IT Service Catalog
- What it takes to build out a centralized CMDB (Configuration Management Database)
- The processes needed to streamline and automate Datacenter and Client operations
- How to deliver IT as a Service (IT consumption by an end user through self-service)

Journey to the Programmable Data Center: Modernizing our Data Centers – Strategy and Approach
Toby Weiss, Sr. Director, Infrastructure Services, Visionary Integration Professionals® (VIP)
Ninety nine point six percent of our history has
been without computers. There are debates about
when humans first walked the earth. Some
scientists believe 500,000 years ago and others
think it to be around 900,000 years. If we were
to assume our dawn was 500,000 years ago, and
agree that the first mechanical computer was
“the Analytical Engine”, created by Charles
Babbage in 1837[i], we can begin to get a
perspective of how early we might be in the
evolution of compute environments for
Information Technology.
In the last 176 years, we have advanced from
mechanical difference engines to iPhones, Nike
Fuel Bands, cloud computing, and the Sequoia
Supercomputer[ii]. On top of this we have
acknowledged exponential data growth and the
challenges it comes with. Along this journey the
data center has been forecasted to become the
next utility. Data Centers are at the foundation
of many of our businesses. And with the recent
advent of the abstraction of the physical layer
of IT (servers, network devices, storage
systems, etc.) we are moving into a virtual
world where we can rapidly deploy and re-deploy
compute and storage capacity with virtual
devices.
Many of us still have legacy environments and
budget constraints. The promise of the Software
Defined Data Center (or Programmable Data
Center) is in the press daily almost. The
journey into the next era of programmable data
centers that operate as utilities (like electric
utilities as in Nick Carr’s book The Big Switch)
is underway. Yet, we have to manage our own
journey to modernize our data centers in
alignment with our business objectives and
budgets despite the hype and promise of the
early market solutions. Let’s explore options to
successfully plan for this journey to modernize
our data centers in concert with our business
priorities and IT budget realities.

1:30pm-2:30pm
How to Build an Internal Foundation for Running IT Like a Business
Adam Stewart, Vice President of Engineering, Autotask
Corporation
Jason Lehr, Director of Technology and Infrastructure, Autotask
Corporation
Why should you consider running your IT
Department like a business? IT Departments of
all sizes are having similar experiences in
staying relevant with customers as are IT
Service Provider businesses. Competition for
budget dollars, the onslaught of the cloud and
bring your own device (BYOD), service automation
needs and customer churn are just some of the
issues threatening the viability of a business
and are now similarly affecting IT Departments.
In this session, learn how you can apply some of
the same strategies deployed by successful IT
Service Providers to continue to stay top of
mind and relevant to your customers, reduce
costs, free up capital for innovative projects,
and otherwise stay in business.
In this session you will learn:
- Why the customer comes first
- Methodologies to productize and define a service catalog to meet customer needs
- Why SLA’s are critical to your success
- What automating service delivery is all about
- How to determine the cost of services
- Considerations for charging your customers and managing budget
- Next steps you can take
